1860-2100:
The Westhaven Empire, Evershade Academy and the Changeling Era

1860 — 1890: Emergence of Changelings and the Westhaven Empire.

c. 1860: In the 300 years since the Ecanrian Empire fell, Westhaven has grown to become an empire itself, though not as big or powerful. The biggest of its colonies is Tir’Galdur, which lies to the Northwest of Westhaven, and where the strong Fae presence means there are a number of magic-users… they’re just too scattered and unorganized to have stopped Westhaven from conquering.

1862: The Evershade Academy of Arcane Arts is founded in Tir’Galdur by Gavrielle Emberthane, Regulus Corvenne, Sylvaine Vaelora and Hamish Larkfield, who set up the four study branches of the school: Sorcery, Wizardry, Glamour and Bardic. The official goal is to foster learning and progress… the unofficial goal is to unite Tir’Galdur’s magic-users and revolt against Westhaven.

1893:  The Changeling Hospital is founded in Edridge, the capital of the expanding Westhaven Empire. The institution aims to care for superhuman or semi-human foundlings, orphans, and abandoned children, offering them a place to belong. (In Westhaven, metahumans are predominantly known as “changelings.” This term reflects their ability to shift forms or possess extraordinary abilities, distinguishing them from ordinary humans.)

1893 — 1900: Though the Changeling Hospital is staffed by compassionate caregivers and magical practitioners who help the children discover and control their powers, promoting acceptance of their identities as changelings, people of Westhaven are skeptical and the Hospital is under many threats.

1900: The changeling orphans at Changeling Hospital form a secret organization known as The Protectors, led by the charismatic Finnian Blackwood. The group operates in secrecy throughout Kingsmarsh, using their unique powers to fight crime and help those in need. The Protectors establish a code of conduct, emphasizing justice, unity, and the importance of helping the marginalized, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie among the members.

1930: Jack Chance, an orphan with odd pink skin, white hair, and hypnotic abilities, is delivered to the Changeling Hospital.

1955: Jack, Initially a member of The Protectors, Jack feels constrained by their rules. Along with fellow orphans Violet Blackwood and Clara Renfield, breaks out of the hospital to form their own trio of notorious criminals. They take on the names The Partisan (Jack), The Tempest (Violet), and The Shade (Clara), using their powers for personal gain rather than altruism.

1960: The Protectors have become a semi-known organization in Westhaven, recognized for their heroism. However, they frequently clash with The Partisan, The Tempest, and The Shade, creating a rivalry that captivates the public. Rumors circulate of a brewing conflict between the two groups, sparking debates about the morality of their methods and the legitimacy of their goals.

1962: The Evershade Academy celebrates its hundredth anniversary. Sylvaine Velora, well over 200 but still strong and youthful thanks to her Fae blood, plots to conquer all of Tir’Galdut and the rest of the world, making deals with the Fae Lords in order to reach her goal.

1965: The Shade dies during a confrontation with The Protectors, marking a tragic turning point in the conflict. The Tempest is gravely injured and taken to the undersea kingdom of Oceandria for healing by its benevolent king, Nereus. Although she survives, her physiology alters drastically, making it impossible for her to live on land again.

1971: The Tempest marries King Nereus, officially becoming Queen Violet of Oceandrea. The Partisan is invited as the only surface-dweller guest at the royal wedding, symbolizing a fragile truce between their worlds. The wedding is celebrated as a significant event, bridging the gap between the surface world and Oceandrea, showcasing a newfound alliance.

1975: The Protectors are officially sanctioned as heroes of Westhaven by the Empire’s ruling council. This event marks them as “the oldest superhero team in the world,” leading to an increase in their popularity and acceptance within society. With official status, The Protectors gain access to resources, training, and recognition, further solidifying their place in Westhaven history.

1977: Sylvaine Velora makes her coup attempt but fails. Fae Lords and Ladies instead begin establishing their rule of Tir’Galdur, banishing the study line of Glamour from Evershade; from now on, the school will only teach Sorcery, Wizardry and Bardic. Glamour will only be allowed for the Fae and certain members of the nobility.

1980: Due to their new Fae ruling class, Tir’Galdur becomes the first of Westhaven’s colonies to gain independence. This starts the slow decline of the Westhaven Empire.

1990: The Partisan, unaging due to his unique abilities, begins to delve into the secrets of the universe. He adopts the role of a “freelance agent,” working on various projects that bring him closer to the truth.

1990 — 2100: Like Ecanria before it, Westhaven gradually loses a lot of its colonies and the empire ends with a whimper rather than a bang. By 2100, Westhaven is reduced to one kingdom.

2100 — 2207:
The Third Waric War, the Rise of Paragon Bay and the Cold War

2273: The first meeting between Lord Waric and Queen Vespara doesn’t go particularly well, starting a bit of an international incident. War between Ecanria and Tir’Galdur is avoided because Tir’Galdur disavows Vespara and assures both Waric and the rest of the world that “that lunatic isn’t the Queen of anything, much less our country.”

2274: An enraged Queen Vespara starts a hostile takeover in Tir’Galdur. She begins driving the Fae Lords and Ladies from the land to establish herself as the Queen.

She accepts, and her mother, the Honourable Lady Blackthorne,  isn’t opposed to the idea… but because she’s nobility and he isn’t (he’s not even from Tir’Galdur) tradition dictates that he has to go through a number of trials in order to prove himself “worthy”. • Sadie Swift, highly pregnant, is cursed by a demon and goes into labour as the demons toy with her. The Familiar four, under orders from White Sorceress (who essentially sent them away so they wouldn’t sacrifice themselves as well), help her, beat back the demons and help deliver the baby… who thanks to the curse is born with a tail and monkey-like traits.
      •  Queen Vespara takes the opportunity to attack Leo and June Blackthorne in the hope of getting their now 5 year old daughter Holly. Leo and June sacrifice themselves and seemingly kill Vespara to save Holly, who survives, but with total amnesia and a curious flame-shaped mark on her belly.

2342: Sadie and Monkaya have become the only non-magicals who are allowed to enter the White Coven’s Refuge in Mystic Grove whenever they want, largely because they help the Familiar Four deal with the loss of White Sorceress.
