Profile

Rosalyn Westwood isn’t just a Westwood — to an entire generation of young queer people (especially lesbian girls!) she’s the Westwood.

The oldest and most famous of the six “Westwood Grandchildren”, not to mention the only one among them with metahuman abilities, Rosalyn has been creating spectacular illusions since she was a kid, and has been in the spotlight since before she knew how to spell her last name. With her flawless skin, media-perfect smile and gift for saying the exact right thing on live TV, she has always been “Grandmother” Grace’s favourite to bring along for premieres and fundraisers. After she came out as a lesbian at the age of 13 she’s also been a queer icon in nations far less LGBTQ-friendly than Paragon Bay.

As the skimpily-clad superheroine Dream Jewel, she’s adored by fans and media alike… okay, it helps that 40% of the media is owned by Westwood Inc, but the public’s adoration is genuine.

Ask the superhero community, though, and you might get less flattering opinions. Many of Paragon Bay’s supers view Rosalyn as a spoiled and vain rich girl who enjoys playing superheroine just for the attention. Sure, she’s got some pretty strong powers; not only is she an amazing illusionist, ever since she inherited the Circlet of Westwood at the age of 18 she’s been a fairly strong magic-user who, while never officially a part of the White Coven, always does her part in team-ups and dealing with threats to the city… but she seldom does any heroics without making sure the cameras are on her, and suspiciously many of her heroic deeds somehow benefit the Westwoods or their corporation more than anyone else. And the police’s Supervillain Investigation Department have long since suspected her of being involved in some shady business, including kidnappings, sex trafficking and making threats to the Westwoods meet with some “unfortunate accidents”.

But nothing has ever been proved and the Westwoods have never met a problem they couldn’t throw money at until it went away, so Rosalyn remains a public media darling.

Behind the charming, witty and perhaps slightly promiscuous “good girl” facade, though, is a much colder young woman… ruthless, calculating secretive and  fiercely loyal to the Westwood family. And not in a sweet “Sunday dinners with the cousins” way. More in a “we brainwashed each other for the greater good” kind of way. All Westwoods are trained from birth (subtly, magically, relentlessly) to put family first… and Rosalyn takes that very seriously. Especially after she began wearing the Circlet of Westwood and the spirit of her long-since dead great-great grandmother began whispering to her as a voice in her head…

Important Relationships

The Westwood family:
Like all Westwoods, Rosalyn is utterly and unquestioningly devoted to the Westwood family. If any Westwood needs her help in any way, she’ll provide it. There are, however, a few family members she’s closer to than others:

Claudia Westwood: Even though Claudia died long before Rosalyn was born, Rosalyn is probably closer to her than any of the other Westwoods… simply because Claudia, who tied her spirit to the Circlet of Westwood before she died and now can talk to Rosalyn as a voice in her head whenever Rosalyn wears the circlet. Claudia is the true mastermind behind more than half of Rosalyn’s plots and schemes; Rosalyn may snark and talk back and be flippant with her great-grandmother, but she always obeys her orders even when she doesn’t see the sense in them. Partly because of the traditional Westwood conditioning to always put family first and partly because she’s become addicted to wearing the circlet and the feeling of power it gives her.

“Grandmother” Grace Westwood: Rosalyn’s maternal grandmother and, after the death of Claudia, the matriarch of the Westwood clan. “Grandmother Grace” is the outward face of Westwood Inc and has been the main CEO of the company ever since she inherited the position from her father Walt, who started the company. It’s under her leadership that “Westwood Films” have become the multimedia company “Westwood Inc”. Grace thrives as the CEO and the matriarch of the Westwoods, even though her children’s origin is somewhat unorthodox: In her youth Grandmother Grace was once kidnapped by Lord Waric of Ecanria and spent some months as his hypnotized sex slave. The result was the triplets Charlotte, Adam and Emily.

Charlotte Amelia Westwood and Henry Davidson III: Rosalyn’s parents. Charlotte is a writer and scriptwriter who has written and produced several movies and TV series for Westwood Inc, with Rosalyn providing special effects for a number of them. Henry is the heir to the Davidson Jelly Empire and is the only Westwood spouse to not have taken the Westwood name after he married a Westwood… though he did have to agree that all his children would carry the Westwood name. Rosalyn is their only child.

Lily Mae and Sarah Anne Westwood: Sarah’s favourite cousins. Lily is the daughter of Rosalyn’s maternal uncle Adam Westwood and is a bit of a social media butterfly, while Sarah is the daughter of Charlotte’s cousin Thomas Jay Westwood and is a young actress who’s starred in a couple of cheesy action movies. Rosalyn shares “everything” with her two cousins… including sex slaves…

Lord Waric of Ecanria:
The immortal sorcerer and tyrant of the nation of Ecanria, and Rosalyn’s grandfather. The relation has never been officially proved, but Grandmother Grace was kidnapped by Waric in her youth (rumour has it that Waric didn’t like how he was being presented in Westwood Inc’s first animated TV show Kaldor and the Spirits of Ecanria, where Waric is the main villain),  and she did spend several months as one of his hypnotized harem girls, and after she was rescued she was heavily pregnant.  When Rosalyn proved to have strong powers of illusion of hypnosis — powers that Waric himself is known for — it was seen as confirmation that he was her grandfather. Waric has not commented.

Sleeping Spectre:
Jenna Lee Foster is Rosalyn’s personal assistant in her normal life, her sidekick in her superhero life… and her sex slave in private. Jenna is a metahuman, but her powers only manifest when she’s asleep. For years she was the silent vigilante Nightshift, who went out at night and floated high in the sky, occasionally swooping down on criminals to drain their energy — all while deeply asleep and not having any idea what was going on. Rosalyn has since “re-trained” her to become “Sleeping Spectre”, and now whenever Rosalyn goes out as Dream Jewel, she either hypnotizes Jenna to sleep or makes her drink a sleeping potion, so that Sleeping Spectre can join in.
